Puerto Varas, known as “the city of roses”, has become in recent years one of the most attractive cities in Chile. It blends almost perfectly with its impressive natural landscape, formed by Lake Llanquihue and the volcanoes Osorno, Calbuco and Puntiagudo, also with its streets that keep the most typical German architecture as well as pastry and with its many activities that offer innumerable panoramas.
The foundation of Puerto Varas is part of the so-called colonization of the Llanquihue Lake area, and dates back to 1853, when actions taken by the Government aimed to incorporate uninhabited territories from the southern area to the rest of the country.
It has a rainy oceanic climate. The rainfall occurs throughout the year, and it is more intense in the winter and especially during the spring. Although in winter there are more rainy days, rain is less intense and is accompanied by north winds. In spring the most intense and violent precipitations of the year take place, nevertheless these are of shorter duration than the ones in winter.
In Puerto Varas you can make various excursions and outdoor activities such as fly fishing, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, volcano climbing.
The mixture of the German culture with the ancient culture of Chiloé generates a growing interest particularly of the traditions and the architectural beauty of the city. There is a great gastronomic offer that shows the cultural influence and the best of Chilean and local food.
It is a place that offers wide possibilities for international tourists. In addition to its tourism development with hotel complexes of various sizes, the city has a modern gaming casino.
